The rise and fall of the Celtic warriors – Philip Freeman

Trace the rise and fall of the ancient Celts, a group of hundreds of independent warrior tribes defeated by the Roman Empire.

One summer evening in 335 BCE, Alexander the Great was resting by the Danube River when a band of strangers approached his camp. Alexander had never seen anything like these tall, fierce-looking warriors with huge golden neck rings and colorful cloaks. They were Keltoi or Celts— a collection of independent tribes spread across Europe. Philip Freeman details the rise and fall of the ancient Celts.

In Alexander’s time there were no Celts in Asia Minor yet. It was one of Alexander’s successors who brought them over as mercenaries.

Vercingetorix is not a name, like Brennus is not a name, it is a Celtic title. It means something close to king of kings. As a Brenn is a chief of a tribe.

for more detailed stuff about the celts, I highly recommend The British History Podcast. it’s a super thorough telling of the history of Great Britain, from prehistory to the dawn of WWII. 351 episodes in, the host is still only talking about King Knut.

Seems odd to use all those random symbols when the Celts of Ireland actually had their own alphabet, the Ogham, which was really unusual and interesting.

Where’s Portugal? It’s always spain: "from turkey to Spain", "the conquest of Spain" instead of the Iberian penninsula

  27. MnM on July 28, 2020 at 12:25 pm

Please stop calling the whole Iberian Peninsula "Spain". There are two countries in there.

The three kings told Alexander that they fear the sky falling on their heads. Thus the asterix reference
