STUPID (fun) Electronic Toys from the 90's!!!!

In the 1990’s a lot of toys came out using the latest digital technology that made noise, tried to get your attention and generally DRIVE YOU NUTS!!

The classic Tamagotchi from Japan. AND the American version, the Gigapet. With friends like the Furbee, Teddy Ruxpin, the Game Boy and even “adult toys” like the Palm Pilot. (PDA) AND the first ever Smart Watch, the Timex Data Link.

From the web:
TAMAGOTCHI (1990S)

Back in the ’90s—before we’d ever heard of Angry Birds or Farmville—handheld virtual pets were all the rage. There was GigaPet and others, but Tamagotchi led the pack. And these keychain-size activity games had you checking in on your egg baby about a million times a day. Its basic premise? An alien species has dropped an egg from outer space to see if they can survive on Earth. Your task: Raise the egg into an adult alien. (Totally normal, right?) If you’re longing for some of that nostalgia, no worries: You can get your fix right on your phone—there is now a Tamagotchi app.

I think Karyn has it this week! By that I mean toilet training the kids… Who can forget the excitement of opening a 1 – 2 year olds’ diaper, Oh what fun, what anticipation and what a mess!! Potty training wasn’t much less traumatic and what with time expended and money spent on encouragements (bribes), it was enough to put you in the poor house. Probably better to stick to noisy toys…..

🙄🙄Well only one way to turn those things off is to take the good Ole hammer 🔨 to them 😂😂 If that cat would of woken me up in the night like that yup the hammer would of been its fate!!! LOL thanks for sharing and uh I hope you are sleeping lol lol

Only ever had one of those electronic toys, a fake dog called an Aibo…I think. After being annoyed by it once too often I took it’s batteries out. Real dogs don’t annoy me at all, love em. But that thing was just awful, lol. I did today get a 1966 model NT-11 Thunderbird dealer promo car with a built in Philco AM radio that doesn’t work. It will be a Christmas present for a friend who restores old radios and he recently bought a 66 T-bird. It and the dealer promo car I got him are both Wimbledon White so I’m hoping it will be the perfect gift.

I really love cats, but I think I’d shoot that squalling cat toy. Jeez that thing’s annoying.

Ok, so you guys win the award for most annoying background noises! lol. This reminds me of the number of times when my kids were young and one of their toys would go off in the middle of the night. Then, a.) I couldn’t find the off switch and, b.) It had no battery door. More than once I had to literally put the toy outside, still going off, for days!

I have 3 Furbys. One of the, way back in the day, had been silent for near 6 months. Sitting quietly on the dresser. One night it woke me up saying "Loud Sound, Loud Sound" It happens that a possum was in my hen house attacking the Rooster and there was a racket from the rear of the house. I ran out to see the Possum trying to drag him through the wire by his leg. The leg never did heal, nor work after that attack but the Rooster, Peeper, made it around the yard on one leg for several years after. I saved his life thanks to the silent Furby that night. The Furby has not spoken since that night. They now adorn my display shelf in "The Train Room" where I have my HO layout.

I had a Casio 105 and then an iPaq – PDA and used it all the time, people would give me a hard time about having them. ? Now everyone has one and it is called a smart phone. Then I get a hard time years later for not having one of those smartphones. You just can not win.

  11. Dale Bee on June 13, 2020 at 10:02 am

I thought Furbies were annoying.. especially when you put two of them together..

  12. Darrel Carson on June 13, 2020 at 10:04 am

It was fun, it was crazy and I’m glad we’ve moved on!

I’m looking for a toy from the late 80s to 90s… I’m convinced it was a blue and white owl by Tomy that you’d put cards in and you’d press buttons on the owl and it’d say “You’re right” or “Try again”. It took D batteries too if that helps. Can you recall what it was? Thanks!!!!

  15. eclemensen on June 13, 2020 at 10:12 am

Take the batteries out.  The reason I’m watching this eighteen hours after publication, is because my toy, the computer, drives me nuts, It wouldn’t work so I had to take it to the vet, sorry Staples, to bring it back to live.  Yes it drives me nuts.

  16. Buddy Blair on June 13, 2020 at 10:12 am

The off switch is a baseball bat.

Oh yes….Teddy Ruxpin and Gumby! But watching the kids faces on Christmas morning watching those two tell stories was PRICELESS!!

  18. Andy Evans on June 13, 2020 at 10:12 am

Of course I am using a first generation IPad to watch this……Would you expect anything less?

  19. Robert Lucido on June 13, 2020 at 10:15 am

I thought I’d let you know that the Carson & Colorado restoration group is going to run Southern Pacific narrow gauge 4-6-0 #18 at the Durango and Silverton on selected Thursdays in January and February, if you happen to get out that way

  20. Trmn311 on June 13, 2020 at 10:18 am

Soooo the kids don’t feed the thing then it dies then you have to pay for the therapy because your poor kid is traumatized! Yup;nothing says fun like going to the shrink!

  21. pbyfr on June 13, 2020 at 10:18 am

wow, what a mix. I didn’t see many tamaguchi, not so popular here. And I resisted the Palm (well, I a lot more expansive NEEDED a mini-DV video recoder, which I don’t use any more since years).
I think that a 286 is now also some strange electronic stuff (in middle school, I learned to use Word 5 on a 286. Hard to believe that Word was working on DOS and not Windows at the time).
You should buy a Sony Aibo to stop the cat! Sure, the price tag is different.

  22. ROBERT snyder on June 13, 2020 at 10:19 am

See you have lots of toys including car models. I’m looking for a Johan 1962 Dodge dart 330 or 440 model.

  23. Kenneth Peters on June 13, 2020 at 10:20 am

Hey Kids, Just need to pet the little annoying get out here Kiddie

  24. ROBERT snyder on June 13, 2020 at 10:20 am

We have a "urby" still in the box and it works.

  25. HunterR909 on June 13, 2020 at 10:23 am

That is hilarious, If you want to see your cat really jump, place a Cucumber next to your cat and watch the fun.

  26. Deplorable Whiteman on June 13, 2020 at 10:25 am

I still have my daughters gameboy color and i still play it

  27. ian narita on June 13, 2020 at 10:27 am

My wife says that car would pull the batteries never to be heard from again!

Also liked the set of World Book encyclopedias on the shelf.

Teddy Ruxpin. I was working For a courier company back in the mid 1980’s. One of the clients was Worlds of Wonder in Fremont.

    Thx again

I remember Simon Says did the match the color lights or something

  29. Greg Uzar on June 13, 2020 at 10:39 am

Got through. No artificial lifeforms were harmed in this very delicious episode from the attic, Rough Shed, study… Got the Furbby and Teddy Ruxpin along with an animated Mickey Mouse that works similar to Teddy. What a hoot. You two are a tonic for us. Greg

I have an ancient Gameboy Color of my own. It actually used to be my cousin’s and it’s clear purple plastic. I have one game for it, and that’s Super Mario. I absolutely love it!

  31. Steve W on June 13, 2020 at 10:40 am

I did not find this boring!

  32. Greg Uzar on June 13, 2020 at 10:41 am

I need to stop and write something. Right now Miss Karyn is trying to shut down the cat. What a Hoot. I promise, I’ll finish because I was the "Dad" during those years. OMG, a life long freind’s wife gave the youngest a "Furby" remember that bit of frustration? Perhaps when I finish watching you guys will talk about it. Dale is hysterically funny coping with the chaos and by the background sounds emanating off screen. Karyn is at her best doing this segment. Priceless Toy Man and Mate, right here, I tell you what. Okay, back to that darn cat. As always, this is brilliant. Greg and Jeanne

I would think that the way to turn off one of those toys that won’t turn off is to remove the batteries. Unless they have a huge capacitor in there that can keep it going forever, it should not have the capability to keep going without power!

That is funny. School lockers that are sitting there making pet noises and the student is out sick. Hmmmmm
