How Scientists Achieved 39.7% Efficiency [2020]

A new solar cell technology has broken the old 22% efficiency record, all of that with a 6-junction solar cell design, something that was thought unachievable for the past decade.
Developments in production methods of the famous III-V group of Semiconductor elements (IUPAC 13-15), was able to arrange them in unique ways to generate this amazing technology, all thanks to their distinctive alloy properties.
Groups III-V of the periodic table are known for their special characteristics that, when combined, produce a wide range of energy bandgaps that can be used in multitude of different electronics devices.
The most commonly known combination is Indium Gallium Arsenic or InGaAs …Fart noise… which is widely used in solar panels. In this new research they explored other elements of the group with a variety of combinations which ultimately increased solar panels conversion efficiency to a whopping 39.2% efficiency at one-Sun.

    Normal solar panels work much better in the cold, even with much less light. Our 305 W panels have hit 385 W output in Jan when it was -25 C with a wind. That translates to mid 30’s %. In space it is near absolute zero on the back side so I would expect higher output and the big one, no clouds to weaken the sunlight. Higher efficiency panels at a reasonable cost would be fantastic for things like boats with limited areas to mount the panels.

    I was at the conference where NREL announced the six junction structure. Funding for high efficiency solar cell research seems to be drying up in favor of materials showing a rapid increase in efficiency such as perovskites.

    Why r we so bad at converting energy? I feel like the universe is mocking us… Giving us all this amazing physics and energy whatever, but no way to properly use it because we cant convert it properly… I feel trolled by the universe

    Other things exist besides solar wind and turbines… You can move boats without turbines also but this technology has been suppressed very heavily on your planet unless you’re and one of the groups that shares it with its members openly…

    Soon radioactive waste will be sent to space or even to sun to be disposed of it, as there is no space for this waste on planet Earth… Solar panels are only good if there is a light source, if there isn’t it’s total waste to have solar panels. There are places on Earth with polar nights and polar days, its good to have solar panel on polar days, but it’s useless to have it on polar nights… Basically solar panels have to have battery and a different power source, like wind or other, to compensate and alternate. Or you need tons of space, and tons of battery alone to survive the winter on solar only…

    Fact Checking in ur first 20ish seconds. 22% is just the high end of industry standard solar cells. It’s not the record. The multi-junction solar cell record with concentrator was set in 2015 at around 44% and non-concentrator record was set in 2013 around 39%. But this is good news overall: solar cells of different designs have set new records in recent years. Please I love science and I know it may be confusing for those viewers who didn’t study solar tech science, but since your video is very scientific, please be more technical or specific in how you phrase things. Your video title says 39.7% but in the video you say "a whopping 39.2%". Science articles NREL online says the newest record set by the 6 junction solar cell is 47.1%

    (Unless we could figure out fission in only 35 years.. tops…)

    I know people fear the idea of nuclear energy and the idea sending highly radioactive rockets which often tend to explode…. but there’s no reason not to mine and refine and.. outside our atmosphere…


    Enough… i’m getting sick of all of this renewables bullshit.. it’ll never be as effective as nuclear energy.. as simple as that…

    I would disagree! Cost per watt is important. Yet, there might come "space occupation cost" soon, or "opportunity cost of space". This is why we have regulatory entities.
