How do you make an LMP1 car from scratch?

Designing and manufacturing a racing car of any sort is a mission, but how about an LMP1 car? With its all-carbon construction, its highly-strung twin turbo engine and its incredible aero, the Ginetta G60 LT-P1 is one of the quickest cars in the world, and Mike went behind the scenes to check out how you start from scratch to end up with a full-blooded Le Mans car.

They start aesthetically and THEN try to make it work?? No wonder they don’t beat Toyota. What would happen if they gave it the full ugly beans?

I liked the design of the P3 better it looked more modern.

  6. Heine Vendelbo on September 22, 2020 at 4:14 pm

The only way I personally know Ginetta, is that they allways in simulators have the slowest car. But, we always end up in them because they are so fun to optimize and race in. Keep dreaming and keep calm everyone

Awesome content! It was a great way to show and explain to my 8yo brother the process behind manufacturing a race car from scratch

0:55 You make it sound like this Ginetta is a better car than the 919, but it just isn’t. Porsche’s fastest lap at Silverstone was run in their Le Mans Spec Downforce Package, completely unsuited to the Silverstone track (it was used in Silverstone due to homologation rules that gave them an advantage with their High Downforce Package for the rest of the season). Furthermore, the 919 Evo could easily do something around 1:27. If Ginetta would be freed from restrictions they might improve by a few seconds, but theocracy has way less potential than the 919. On top of all, the car´s race performances have been absolutely atrocious. I don’t want to act like a butthurt 919 fanboy, just trying to set the facts straight 🙂

LMP1 class is quite pointless for now. The other teams can’t keep up with hybrid toyota

I would get a lmp1 chassis and put a evening dress on it and make a road going hypercar.

That firewall looks like it’s come straight from Tatooine.

  26. Serchan Look on September 22, 2020 at 4:39 pm

Question to you experts bugging me since a long time: Why does a team like Ginetta (or Rebellion) spend all these efforts and millions for a LMP1 car, when you have to race against Porsche or Toyota with a 10x or even higher budget and advanced technology available, making it almost impossible to win against them? In other words: Why fight in a battle you can’t win?
My greatest respect to those teams daring it, but what’s the motivation and reason behind it? Why would someone be interested in it and who pays it??

  27. Lorenzo Abanes on September 22, 2020 at 4:40 pm

What about the hybrid? Though I love the ginetta, but I prefer the original blue livery, that was beautiful

Top class insight into how a fast car is made from the ground up. It’s so cool to see how an idea turns into a sketch, then a 3d digital model then into the real thing. It’s like being a 10 year old all over again!!!

  31. ken cohagen on September 22, 2020 at 4:44 pm

I’ve wondered about this for years. Why are they using such a butt ugly car? I knew regulations had something to do with it, but this explains everything else.

  32. SCREAMIN' LORD BYRON on September 22, 2020 at 4:44 pm

That engineer pushed for a half scale model so his 5 year old son could get the best go kart ever right?!

  33. Sammy13Nation on September 22, 2020 at 4:44 pm

So wait, why bother with a p1 car right now? I thought WEC was getting rid of p1 and p2, replacing it soon with their new hypercar class?

  34. Wednesday on September 22, 2020 at 4:44 pm

Never been a fan of LMPs, 80s/90s Group C racers all the way!

Always fascinating when manufacturers throws everything at a project before new rules are introduced (hyper car 2020-2021). Lets hope that Le Mans goes ahead in September so we can see what the Ginetta P1 can do.

  38. Juan Pablo Castano on September 22, 2020 at 4:48 pm

3D printed parts are you serious? Why can’t we have the real lightweight parts from real materials like the cars did back in the day. People are getting lazier and lazier every day.

To make an LMP1 car from scratch, first you must create the universe.

The Ginetta factory is in the town where I live, Garforth, Leeds. I never really used to think how odd it was for our small town to have a car manufacturer. I know a few people that work there too.

  49. Eren T on September 22, 2020 at 4:58 pm

Is it really faster than a 919 around silverstone? The hybrids are/were very quick, so if thats true that will be quite impressive..
