Casey (https://www.youtube.com/putsch1) launched Genius Garage, a program to give college students real world engineering experience. When he was looking for the best test platform car for them to use, he found the perfect thing – a WSC Prototype car. Could restore it back into winning condition?

    If I was a millionaire I would donate to Genius Garage. You know your money is actually going to something that kids will benefit from

    Haha 1:55 is DEFINITELY racecar life. And I thought my 2011 Civic Si on coilovers was low…

    Genius Garage is such a cool idea. I did a mechanical engineering degree and it sucks to be a university student, nobody wants to hire you. It’s hard to get opportunities because nobody trusts you. This would be such a motivating project that really stands out on a resume and pushes everyone toward even greater opportunities.

    Some folks — and Casey’s one — just have a knack for turning their lives into adventure. (His "Gatsby" Auburn and "Pike’s Peak" ‘Vette come to mind.) But Casey also has the ability to show others how to spark their own passions, discover their own dreams, and follow ’em — in short, how to be adventuresome. That’s a pretty cool superpower!!

    You can see Casey get a little choked up at one point. I think he realized that his biggest contribution was making people realize they aren’t alone with these crazy projects. Remember, Casey used to do this with no real support other than people giving him rides…

    @5:04

    when I was in university, and after, I would openly criticize my professors and the people in grad programs for not having any practical, salable skills. and while I was always the guy they’d come to get a properly written piece of software made quickly, or work out the maths behind the problem they’d been trying to solve for two years, or fix their computer network, or handle a plumbing issue, they never understood wtf I was talking about and just lectured me about how I wasn’t nice enough.

    it’s a very real thing that there’s nothing practical being taught in university. I even went to mine a few years after I received my degree asking about their refund policy, pointing out that any legitimate business will generally have a satisfaction guarantee of some sort that’s tied into a refund policy, and since I wasn’t satisfied that I’d received an education worth the money I paid it was an issue worth exploring with them. they just thought I was out of my mind.

    I love this kind of philanthropy. It’s not just handing money to people, it’s helping them grow so they can help others grow too. It’s teaching a person to fish instead of just giving them a fish.

    Is it strange that the fastest cars in the world can be the easiest to drive at the same time? Sometimes.

  39. coscorrodrift on September 21, 2020 at 4:40 pm

    Great story and great project. I’m in my university’s motorbike racing team and what he’s saying is spot on. I think it can be argued that there’s no need to have studied engineering in a such an applied type of endeavour and I’d say it’s a fair conclusion, there’s studies to be made and those are useful and interesting engineering-wise, but to run a successful racing team in these categories official engineering isn’t always that key. But the part about the "making the best educated guess" was so on point, we’re just being "tested" continuously by the environment and by the obstacles that come up on these basic concepts that are taught on courses and that you’ve mindlessly ran numbers on and now they’re coming up on the real world. I think it’s a great project to be in if you like the field, and if you want a more open perspective on engineering as a whole.
