AUDI Flying Car prototype – Flying cars are on the way!

Watch now the new Audi Pop.Up Next flying car!

More and more people are moving to cities and more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation. In future senior citizens, children, and people without a driver’s license will want to use convenient robot taxis. With a smart allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit in equal measure. At Drone Week in Amsterdam Audi, Airbus and Italdesign are presenting for the first time a flying and driving prototype of “Pop.Up Next”. This innovative concept for a flying taxi combines a self-driving electric car with a passenger drone. In the first public test flight, the flight module accurately placed a passenger capsule on the ground module, which then drove from the test grounds autonomously. This is still a 1:4 scale model. But as soon as the coming decade, Audi customers could use a convenient and efficient flying taxi service in large cities – in multi-modal operation, in the air and on the road. Without changing vehicles, passengers will enjoy their leisure time, relax, or work.

OR you can come with a Rolls-Royce get out and get inside a helicopter, more confortable, more conveniant, less dangerous, and it already exists.

looks like a somewhat poorly funded students project, all the self driving is just for the show, no actual useful research/product comes out of this, sadly. Well played, audi.

The modular concept of the pod is brilliant. I would like to suggest that a version that connects to 3D elevated guideway infrastructure such as the skyTran personal rapid transit system might be very attractive. Establishing a standardized wheel platform and pod that can connect and disconnect from multiple pieces of infrastructure would be outstanding. This modular design solves the 1st mile/ last mile problem of public transit. WIth the option to connect with an overhead guideway structure economies of scale could be achieved much quicker to bring down the price per pod and the wheel system. The flying e-car part is super cool (except for the still high C02 emission associated with air travel) but does not do as much for reducing traffic congestion for the masses in cities.

Please don’t do this. There are already many restrictions for hobby drones.

The only problem I see is ok you dock with the drone part and fly to another city across the bay for some beignets and coffee, but how are you supposed to drive around the city once you get there, even if the wheeltrain self drives to your location it will be hours till it catches up to where you are and what if there’s no bridge to where you are, can it travel on a ferry by itself? I can see it now, people calling the police to report a lost half a car cause it failed to meet up at their location.

now now. we all thought electric cars wouldn’t be a thing 20 or 10 years ago. i wouldn’t rule out flying cars, it has potential. give like 25 years or so to be out in public.

To be honest, i dont see this kind of stuff to be realistic in any time soon. So why waste money? When these flying car things are topical, im sure that technology has advanced so far that all research, testing and development that has gone into this machine is worthless.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense to make it so the wheels convert and become the drone rotors, that way you don’t leave the wheels behind? Or will whatever city you fly to be comfortable with a drone flying around landing in parking lots of different places. If that’s the case why even have the wheels at all if you can’t use them when you fly to your destination.

Man those engineers have THE best jobs! Playing around with advanced rc car models and docking to various prototype aviation systems. Developing flight control systems with deep learning, using state of the art cards from Nvidia. All while making bank! God, all that tech! And no woman to be seen for miles! These guys truly have THE best jobs!

I’m shocked. So many intelligent engineers wasting precious time and a big company wasting money for tax cuts. Drive to an helicopter and board in it not only is the same thing but also cheaper and more practical.
